LACMA members are invited to join FILM at LACMA for the west coast premiere of ASCO: Without Permission co-presented with the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF). The presentation will be followed by a conversation with Travis Gutiérrez Senger and special guests.
The film tells the story of a revolutionary Chicano art group who turned 1970s Los Angeles into their canvas. Merging activism with radical art-making, ASCO challenged the established order of Hollywood, museums, and media. Unrecognized by mainstream institutions during their time, they are now considered amongst the 20th century’s most significant artists. Director Travis Gutiérrez Senger mirrors their boundary-pushing spirit weaving nonfiction and fiction together with a new generation of Latinx artists.
Travis Gutiérrez Senger is a Mexican American director, writer and producer. His most recent project, ASCO: Without Permission, premiered at SXSW 2025. The film is executive produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna and has received support from the Ford Foundation, Film Independent, NALIP, and the Dolby Creator Lab. His prior projects, Desert Cathedral, White Lines and The Fever, along with a number of shorts, have won awards at festivals such as Tribeca, SXSW, and SIFF. He founded ANM Films to create boundary pushing films that highlight Latinx stories.
