Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring – Lines and Colors

A Fresh Look: Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring - reversed
A Fresh Look: Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring - reversed

Hopefully — even if only for a moment — you got to see in the top two images Vermeer’s iconic painting with fresh eyes. The images are reversed left to right.

It is not an uncommon practice for artists to pause in the process of working on a painting or other artwork and view the work in a mirror. This briefly provides a fresh view of the work, a contrast to the the kind of familiarity that makes it difficult to see something objectively.

We can use the same effect to view images that are so culturally familiar they are difficult to see in the way we might have when first encountering them. The effect doesn’t last long; we soon become accustomed to the “new” view, but it’s nice to get a fresh view of something so familiar.

I’ve included an image of the painting in its normal orientation at the bottom.

Wikimedia Commons has a high resolution image of the painting, available from this page.

I did the same thing back in 2006 with Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and in the process, I believe I gained some insight into her enigmatic smile/not smile.

  • 41 David Bowie Paintings / Artworks

41 David Bowie Paintings / Artworks

He was a musician, a songwriter, an actor, and a legend. But did you know he started as a painter?

A Soulful Art Legacy: Artworks Made by David Bowie

Just like many others around the globe, I was saddened by the departure of a great artist of our age – David Bowie. I have to admit, though, that my sadness is somehow selfish. I knew it wouldn’t be long until my turn to face the end of this life, just like my favorite artist who sang these songs to me and grew up listening to them. However, there are some artists behind the mask of sadness who are simply prompted to promote their freshly made paintings and prints to profit from shocked fans who want to pay tribute to their hero. On that very same day!

    David Bowie’s own art

So, instead of sharing art made on the death of David Bowie, here I would like to share some of his very own body of work. Let’s pay real tribute to him by celebrating his creativity! David Bowie’s paintings show a knowledgeable approach to art, influenced by Frank Auerbach, David Bomberg, Francis Bacon, and Francis Picabia…

    German Expressionism

In the spring of 1976, he and Iggy Pop left America ‘and moved to Berlin. They were fleeing the artistic cannibalism of Los Angeles. Berlin gave him access to a new life and new inspirations. And not just about music: Bowie, whose affinity for German Expressionist art far pre-dated his residence in Berlin, executed then a great number of lithographs and many portrait paintings. It had a great influence on his songwriting. He clearly isn’t a master, and there is a technical lack of practice to be seen, but there is also passion and great sensitivity.

LAP Open Wire, April 19, 2025

It’s time for our bi-montly Open Wire, where you can pose your woodworking questions in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to answer them. Comments will close at around 5 p.m.

Note that there may be a lag between your asking and our answering. Chris is probably working on a chair, and I’m working on…healing. And editing the revised edition of “The Anarchist’s Tool Chest” (photos for which are happening above).

  • Back in Stock: Scrapers & 2 Books

Back in Stock: Scrapers & 2 Books

We just received new stock of the Bowen’s book, and it was charged a tariff.

First the good news: Tariffs aren’t yet affecting Lost Art Press books. We print entirely in the United States. But some of the raw materials, including some of the papers we use, come from Canada. We follow the issue closely, and our books might not see any price increases.

The bad news: metal prices are on the rise because of the tariffs. And the only book we import, “The Welsh Stick Chair: A Visual Record” by Tim and Betsan Bowen was just walloped by a tariff. We had to raise the price significantly.

This is a great book, and I hope we can carry it going forward. But no promises.

We just got the first batch of Crucible Curved Card Scrapers in from the machine shop. These have been out of stock for far too long. I bought the steel before all the tariffs went into effect, so the price is the same ($25). I have no idea what will happen to the price with the next batch (some steel components have doubled in price in the last month).

So buy them now while they are this price.

Finally, we have also restocked on “Doormaking and Window-Making.” There is no price change for this Michigan-printed book.

  • Best Places to Sell Art Online [2025] Top Art Selling Sites

Best Places to Sell Art Online [2025] Top Art Selling Sites

How to choose your selling art online place

    1. Hosted

It’s hosted shopping cart software for short. It allows you to have an independent online store (not on Etsy) without having to have your own website. It’s the opposite of self-hosted shopping cart software, which you install on your website.

    • Pro: You don’t need to pay, to build or maintain your own website. You can start selling art within minutes on your social media.
    • Con: You might get too comfortable with this simple option and forget that your brand needs an artist website. Also, you cannot add new features by customizing them.

    3. Free plan

The free plan allows you to start selling online without having to pay a monthly fee. It’s a great feature for financially struggling artists or those who don’t want to take any risks. Many hosted platforms offer this option to attract new customers.

    • Downside: Free plans aren’t really free. You might be paying more than you’d expected at the end of the day. We take Gumroad for example, the free plan takes almost 10% in total (commission, transaction fee, and listing fee).

    3. Staff Account

Artists are presumably Solopreneurs, but this isn’t the case for many. If you have an agent, a friend, or an intern to help you out, you might want to check out the ‘staff account’ feature. You can’t just hand over all your online credentials away to another person. Many platforms and apps don’t support multiple log-ins to the same account.

    4. Payment Gateways

Different payment gateways might have different processing times, payout transaction fees, credit card rates etc. The most popular payment gateways are PayPal and Stripe. Sometimes a platform could have its own such as ‘Selz Pay’. You can’t choose any payment gateways, you must select from a list of compatible ones.

    5. Instant Payout

Cash flow is another very important factor in any business. If you don’t get paid for a month, would you still be able to run your art business? Cash flow determines if you will make it or break it.

You want to get paid as soon as an order is fulfilled, but the instant payout is not a standard for every platform. Some platforms connect the payment to your PayPal so you get the money directly from your customers. Some platforms (Gumroad, Art of Where) would pay you every Friday.

    6. Number of Products

Many e-commerce platforms that target artists don’t offer unlimited products. There is a limit of 5, 10 or 100 products. This can be very inconvenient when you sell hand-embellished works. Each work is unique, you might want to have a separate product listing for each. As you become more and more productive, you will reach the ceiling for the maximum number of products.

    7. Images per Product

Some platforms (IndieMade, BigCartel) limit the number of images per product. It’s limiting your ability to showcase your art. Apart from images, you want HD videos instead of SD videos. Those content will help you capture the heart of your collectors.

    8. Print-on-Demand Automation

Most of the eCommerce platforms work with Printful and Printify. Once a customer places an order, it’s automatically produced without you having to do anything. However if you want to work with some special local producers or fulfillment centers, you need to make sure your e-commerce platforms work seamlessly with the producer of your choice.

    9. Pay What You Want (PWYW)

Pay What You Want allows your customers to price your products. You can use this as a friendly gesture for digital downloads like eBooks or customized art brushes. You can even give away freebies. If you plan to give away often, make sure your eCommerce platform doesn’t charge you for freebies.

    10. Sell Memberships Courses

Apart from selling art, some platforms allow you to sell memberships to access exclusive content, to receive product subscriptions, or access online courses. You can use open platforms like WooCommerce to install add-ons. Alternatively, you can also use out-of-the-box solutions like Podia. With Podia, you can sell digital downloads, courses, and memberships.

    11. Sell Offline

Artists and craftsmen might have their own studio storefronts or visit craft fairs regularly. You need to manage your inventory so you know which products are available. Also, you need a POS system to receive money if people aren’t carrying cash.

    12. Sell Multichannel

Imagine if you are selling on Amazon and Etsy at the same time apart from your own website, it can be very challenging to manage the product listings.

    13. Sell Services

You may ask: ‘How about selling commissioned art using e-commerce platforms?’ Commissioned works and bespoke pieces are ‘services’ that can be delivered both online and offline. In most cases, you can list them as ‘digital products’ as workarounds. By providing some price estimates and mockups, you are bringing your potential customers one step closer to placing the order.

  • Save on ‘Roubo on Furniture’ Through April 21

Save on ‘Roubo on Furniture’ Through April 21

We’re extending – by one day – the special introductory price for “With All the Precision Possible: Roubo on Furniture.” Through Monday, April 21, 2025, it is $100 with free domestic shipping.

This new edition is a significant upgrade to the “trade” edition, which was in black-and-white and on uncoated paper. The new edition is printed in color, so you can fully appreciate the tone of the cotton paper from the 18th-century engravings. We upgraded the paper to a #100 coated matte paper, enlarged the page size, added printed end sheets and include a tear-resistant dust jacket.

Why do this? Well, we never thought our “trade” edition quite matched the gravity of the project. Don Williams, Michele Pietryka-Pagán and Philippe Lafargue spent years translating the writings of André Roubo’s “l’Art du menuisier.” It is the world’s first masterpiece of woodworking writing, and only bits and pieces were ever translated into English. So last year we began working on this replacement for our “trade” edition.

Get your copy of our new “With All the Precision Possible: Roubo on Furniture” by 11:59 p.m. Monday April 21 to save 20 percent (and get free domestic shipping). After that, it will be $125 (still a good price for this beauty of a book).

  • Call for Art Exhibit Ideas

    Call for Art Exhibit Ideas

Q: Does it cost anything to submit?
A: No. But we also don’t pay a fee for your contribution.

Q: What kind of art does this book cover?
A: Original artworks and art prints. New media and performance art could also be included but not the focus of the book.

Q: Does it only cover high-level exhibitions?
A: We cover all the levels, especially events held by artists in their emerging phase, which makes them relatable. Both group shows and solo shows, both in the developed and developing countries are welcome. Ideally, this exhibition took place in the last two years.

Q: Who can contribute to the book?
A: Artists, art critiques, art dealers, curators, art lovers, basically anyone! You need to give at least one piece of advice to other fellow artists regarding showcasing their art, accompanied by at least three photos. You need to sign a contributor agreement in order to grant us permission to use your copyrighted materials. If the photo is taken by someone else (like a photographer), we also need a release form from the copyright holder.

    Q: How to contribute?
A: Fill the form on our website. You can fill on the behalf of someone as long as you have their permission.

Q: Would my contribution go into the book?
A: Only the best examples that give the most value to other fellow artists will be included in the book. If it is not in the book, we would publish it on our social media or website.

Q: Can my event appear under two different categories?
A: Ideally a place only appears in one of the categories, not in both. For example, a book store gallery is both a book store and a gallery, but it would go into one of the chapters whichever one is more suitable.

Q: How to maximize my chance of appearing in the book?
A: Give accurate information and high resolution images.

Q: I went to a museum and took some photos. Can I write about it as a reviewer without their permission?
A: Writing about a public museum exhibition and including your own photos of the exhibit in a book can fall under fair use in many jurisdictions, depending on how you present the content and how the laws are applied. If you can’t clear the permissions, we can publish it on social media which is generally okay.
